Who studies Portuguese as a foreign language

People looking for Portuguese lessons rarely start out of idle curiosity. There is almost always a concrete reason, and that reason shapes the content. The most common profiles:

  • Expats in Brazil: people who moved for work or family and need to handle daily life in Portuguese, from renting an apartment to seeing a doctor.
  • Remote workers and teams: people who work with Brazilian clients or colleagues and want to follow meetings without a translator.
  • Heritage learners: children and grandchildren of Brazilians who understand the language at home but freeze when reading, writing or speaking.
  • Celpe-Bras candidates: people who need the certificate to study, validate a degree or work in Brazil.
  • Personal motivation: partners of Brazilians, fans of the music and culture, frequent travelers.

Ask about the goal in your first conversation. An expat wants to get through the week; a heritage learner wants to write without embarrassment; a Celpe-Bras candidate wants to pass. Those are three different courses with the same name.

Celpe-Bras: what the teacher needs to know

Celpe-Bras is the Brazilian government's official Portuguese proficiency certificate, run by Inep. The points that change your planning:

  • It is for foreigners and Brazilians whose first language is not Portuguese.
  • It has a written part of up to three hours, with four tasks based on video, audio and texts, and a 20-minute oral part in conversation with an examiner.
  • It certifies four levels: Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced and Upper Advanced. The final level is the lower result between the written and oral parts.
  • There were two sittings in 2026. For 2026/2, exams in Brazil run October 20 to 23 and exams abroad run November 24 to 27.
  • Inep lists 126 accredited test centers in Brazil and abroad.

Because the written part starts from video and audio, drilling grammar alone is not enough. Build tasks where the student watches, listens to or reads something and writes from it. Dates and rules change with each official notice: check Inep's site before promising a timeline.

Brazilian or European Portuguese?

Speakers of both varieties understand each other, but pronunciation, vocabulary and some grammar differ. European pronunciation reduces unstressed vowels heavily, which is usually the biggest shock for learners who started with Brazilian materials. Say up front which variety you teach and stay consistent.

Levels A1 to C2 in practice

The Common European Framework of Reference (A1 to C2) is the scale foreign learners already know from other languages. Use it to agree on goals:

  • A1 and A2: introduce yourself, order food, book appointments and handle daily life with short sentences.
  • B1 and B2: tell stories, defend an opinion and follow meetings and TV shows with some support.
  • C1 and C2: work and study in Portuguese, get humor, irony and regional variation.

Celpe-Bras does not use this scale and only certifies from Intermediate up. With a candidate, explain the difference and show where they stand against the exam, not just against A1–C2.

How to structure a 60-minute lesson

  1. Warm-up (5 min): a short chat about the week, recycling vocabulary from the last lesson.
  2. Input (10 to 15 min): a short audio, video or text that shows the day's structure in real use.
  3. Controlled practice (10 to 15 min): fill-in-the-blank, matching or sentence-ordering exercises.
  4. Free practice (15 to 20 min): conversation or role-play, such as renting an apartment or opening a bank account.
  5. Wrap-up (5 min): the three most important corrections of the day and a short task for the week.

This structure is the backbone of how to teach Portuguese to foreigners online at any level. For advanced students, flip the balance: less guided input, more discussion of a text or video the student picked.

Materials: what to use and what to build

A coursebook gives you sequence, but adult learners engage with what they recognize from their own lives. Combine both:

  • Authentic material: podcasts, soap opera clips, news, menus, rental ads, song lyrics.
  • Your own activities: worksheets and slides built for each student's goal, reusable with the next one.
  • Short games: quizzes, flashcards and complete-the-sentence to lock in vocabulary between lessons.
  • Colleagues' material: see what other teachers publish under materials and in the marketplace.

Brazilian culture in the lesson

Many misunderstandings foreigners have in Brazil are about culture, not grammar. Make room for it:

  • Vague invitations: "aparece lá em casa" and "vamos marcar" do not always come with a date; teach students to read the context.
  • Diminutives: "cafezinho" and "rapidinho" carry warmth and informality, not size.
  • Regional variation: mandioca, aipim and macaxeira are the same thing.
  • Everyday references: music, football, memes and holidays make great conversation topics.

Teaching with English as a support language

Using English as support speeds up the start, as long as there is a plan to phase it out.

  • At beginner levels, use English for instructions, agreements and quick grammar explanations.
  • Compare when it helps, especially with false friends: pretender means to intend, puxar means pull, parentes means relatives.
  • Agree on a rule with the student, such as English only in the last five minutes from A2 onward.
  • Remember that not every student speaks English. With Spanish speakers the challenge is different: closeness breeds portunhol.

How much to charge in dollars or euros

There is no official rate card. Build your price with a method:

  • Start from the net amount you want per hour, in Brazilian reais.
  • Add the fees: platform, payment provider, currency conversion and taxes. See MEI for private tutors.
  • Research what Portuguese teachers charge in the student's country; marketplaces show public prices.
  • Set the price in one currency (USD or EUR) and review it every six months, not with every exchange-rate swing.
  • Sell packages to reduce no-shows and one-off charges. See how to build a lesson package.

Where to find students abroad

  • Expat communities: groups of foreigners in Brazilian cities and forums for people about to move.
  • Content in English: short videos on slang, pronunciation and Brazil vs Portugal differences.
  • Companies: HR and global mobility teams that relocate foreign professionals.
  • Marketplaces: they bring ready demand and charge a commission. Compare in Ludi or Preply.
  • Ludi's directory: students find teachers under Portuguese classes and talk to you directly.
  • Referrals: a happy student often refers coworkers and family.

Time zones and payments

When you teach Portuguese to foreigners online, two practical details come up that local students never raise: time zones and currency. Always write the time with each side's time zone. The United States and Europe change their clocks on different dates, so the gap shifts during the year; reconfirm recurring lessons in March and October.

To get paid, you need a route that accepts cards or international transfers without losing too much on conversion. The options are in how to get paid by students abroad. On Ludi you create packages in reais, dollars or euros: students abroad pay by card through Stripe or by transfer to your Wise account.
